The definition, in parts
Short. Twenty to forty seconds. Long enough to say something specific, short enough that nobody has to respond to it.
Live. A person, in real time, not a recording and not a synthesised voice. This is the part that most obviously distinguishes a hype call from the automated motivational-message apps it gets confused with.
One-way. Nobody asks how you're feeling. There is no conversation to manage at the exact moment you have no capacity to manage one.
Scheduled to the minute. The whole product is timing. A hype call at 8:52 AM outside an interview room is a different object from the same words at nine the night before.

Where the format came from
Everyone has, or has had, one friend who makes them feel unstoppable for ten seconds before they walk into a room. Almost nobody has that friend available at 8:45 on a Tuesday. HYPELINE's founding idea was that the ten seconds are the product, they are separable from the friendship, and they can be booked like a haircut. The site's 1998-web parody presentation is a joke; the service underneath it is an ordinary, compliant, scheduled one.
What a hype call is not
Not a prank call. The recipient has agreed in advance. Nobody is tricked and nothing is at anyone's expense.
Not a robocall. A named human being places it, and it goes only to a number whose owner consented.
Not coaching. No advice, no notes, no preparation help of any kind.
